25th May 2007
NiMBLE members and various concerned
local Metro residents gathered again on
Friday the 25th at the offices of the Coega
Development Corporation, while a ‘twin’
event was held outside the Alcan offices in
Johannesburg.
The time slot of 4-5pm on a chilly Friday
afternoon may not have been the best for
everyone, but we were happy to have
somewhere over 50 people in attendance.
Those present enjoyed energetic drumming by
students volunteers from the NMMU and the
highlight of the gathering must be the
energy that was ‘DRUMMED’ up !
Information was shared by
concerned residents and plans for the future
discussed. Overall a great vibe and fruitful
day as the local press covered the event and
the Coega Development Corporation, local and
national
authorities are taking notice. Moreover,
locals are being informed and it is also
encouraging to get messages of support from
an ever widening circle of well-wishers. We
have international supporters and solidarity
from an incredible range of local and
international universities, environmental
groups, those concerned about global climate
change and significant others.
The ‘march’ was branded
as ‘illegal’ as efforts to comply with
prescriptions were frustrated and
unreasonably so. In the end a warning was
given by the local police services and an
alternative process outlined for ensuring
compliance with public gathering
legislation. Obviously
NiMBLE, as in the past, will make
every effort to ensure public gatherings
comply with the law, and sincerely hope we
will be accommodated in that effort by the
authorities. Thanks to everyone who
arranged the event and especially to those
who attended.
